U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa P. Jackson recognized young people from across the country at the 2009 President’s Environmental Youth Awards (PEYA) ceremony.

These students have made outstanding contributions to environmental protection through projects that help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality and protect America’s waters.

Forum co-sponsor Johnson Controls recognized for energy savings in manufacturing

Johnson Controls Power Solutions has earned the Department of Energy (DOE) "Save Energy Now" award, which recognizes manufacturing facilities that have implemented significant savings through an energy assessment. Johnson Controls' Red Oak, Iowa facility achieved the award by saving more than 10,100 million British thermal units (MMBTU) adding up to 9.9 percent of total energy savings.

Motivated by recent attempts by government agencies to account for the benefits of reduced greenhouse gas emissions in rulemaking, the Pew Center on Global Climate Change held an expert workshop to examine the current state of the art, limitations, and future development needs for analyzing the benefits of avoided climate change. Approximately 80 experts from academe, nongovernmental organizations, and the federal government attended.

While we urge Congress to pass strong legislation that limits carbon pollution and grows the clean energy economy, the impacts of climate change cannot be ignored. Even ambitious greenhouse gas reduction programs will not prevent unavoidable climate impacts, such as more intense Midwestern heat waves, Western wildfires, and coastal threats from rising sea levels.
